Chapter Twenty-four

“Anything new from Krista’s family?” Ang asked, leaning heavily on the maintenance counter.

Swifty shook his head. “Nothing since they took her into surgery. Asta said she’d keep us posted. She knows everyone here is anxious about her.”

Ang glanced at her watch. In the last update, Krista’s sister had informed them that the main concern was managing arterial bleeding from the hip, and they’d taken Krista into emergency surgery. But that had been a couple of hours ago, and she was worried. She wanted to do something, to go somewhere, to be useful. Yet, it was her responsibility to stay at the store and keep it running. It was what she thought Krista would have wanted.

“I was thinking about sending one of those fruit sculpture things or something to the hospital. What do you think?” Swifty asked after a customer dropped off a bike. He picked at one of his fingernails.

“I think she’d love it but probably in a day or two when she can enjoy it?” Ang said, holding back tears because she desperately wanted to see Krista, to make sure she was okay. She hated not being at the hospital with her and being so removed from what was going on that she wanted to fly out of her skin. It was jarring and terrible to have been slowly forming a connection and finally being so close over the weekend just to be left on the periphery during such a traumatic time. It wasn’t as if she could just blurt out how things were with them now, though, or that she needed to be included in…what? She didn’t have a clue.

Swifty scratched his neck. “Yeah. She’s probably out of it, huh? Maybe some flowers then? I’m terrible with this stuff.” His response brought Ang back to the moment.

“Yeah. Flowers would probably be good.” Truthfully, she thought the idea of sending flowers to a hospital was a weird custom. There was never enough room for them, and they always got in the way. But it was finally something she could do to take her mind from the interminable waiting. While Swifty asked each of the associates if they wanted to chip in, she focused on picking out an arrangement. It was something she would have asked Ann to do at Lithium, but she wanted to do it, and by the time she was done, another half hour had passed, and she was back to waiting, keeping her internal turmoil to herself.

“You look miserable. Why don’t you just go home and hang out there?” Swifty said, catching her sitting at the computer with her arms wrapped around herself and gazing into space.

“I think I’d go crazier there, to be honest.”

No one at the shop was able to concentrate, but no one wanted to leave because Krista’s sister was their link to staying updated. Alfur stayed by her side, as did Rupert. At times, it was hard to have the two dogs crowding her, but mostly, they provided comfort.

Finally, it was time to close the store.
